Surrey Student wins Morgan Crucible sponsored “Best Materials Student Award”

Ricardo MirandaThomas Connolly has won one of the UK’s most important science and engineering student awards. Thomas, who has no school science qualifications, proved his capability by winning the Morgan Crucible Award for the Best Materials Student as part of the prestigious annual Science, Engineering and Technology Awards.

Tom won the 2007 award for his undergraduate project on “Field Emission Characterisation of Carbon Nanotube Polymer Composites” at the University of Surrey. The three judges, one of whom was Dr Chris Spacie, a Technical Director in our Carbon division, praised Thomas’ academic achievements and noted that his lecturer described him as “being the life and soul of the department”. This view is shared by his fellow students who voted him ‘student of the year’ for contributing most to the life of his department and supporting others in their studies. Tom accessed the course after completing a foundation year at the university.

Tom received a cash prize and a trophy presented to him by Morgan’s CEO, Mark Robertshaw, at the Awards ceremony, which was held at Alexandra Palace in London. Mark invited Tom to visit Morgan Crucible’s sites in the UK to meet with the Chief Technology Officers of each Division.

Morgan Crucible is proud to have sponsored this Award for eight years and will continue to actively support young materials scientists in their research and studies.
