European Carbon scores a winner
Held every two years, the European Carbon football (soccer) tournament provides a great opportunity for employees from different countries to meet up and take part – and this year’s tournament was another resounding success.
The host country for this year’s tournament – now in its third year – was Italy, whose terrific organisation and hospitality helped make the tournament a highly memorable occasion. Despite the fact that many teams had to travel long distances, and some were delayed and arrived late, all of those taking part played with remarkable energy and enthusiasm – and with great team spirit. Alongside the Italian hosts, players represented European Carbon in France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Luxembourg, Turkey and Wales. Plus, a further team drew together players from Holland, Spain and Sweden – for a team with a truly international flavour.
This year’s tournament saw a first ever outing of the Luxembourg and Turkey teams. Yet their novice status didn’t affect their performance. Both managed to reach the semi-finals, with Turkey going through to the final. Meanwhile, favourites from the outset Italy and the holders Germany lived up to their reputations by also reaching the semi-finals, with Italy beating Germany to a place in the final. The final result saw Italy beat Turkey by 3-0 to become tournament champions – a result that gave much pleasure to both the team, and the local spectators!
All in all, the 2005 European Carbon football tournament proved a very happy and memorable experience for everyone who took part – and all the teams are already gearing up to the next challenge in 2007.
