Improving our green credentials
A rapidly increasing number of Morgan plants around the world have been awarded the prestigious ISO 14001 certification. The ISO 14001 standard is the cornerstone of the International Standards Organisation 14000 series. It specifies a framework of control for an Environmental Management System (EMS) against which an organisation can be certified by a third party.
Such external accreditation is increasingly sought by customers. Many customers, from all around the world, are becoming more environmentally aware and often look for accredited environmental risk management systems, such as the ISO 14001.
Thermal Ceramics has chosen to implement the ISO 14001 standards of environmental management on a global scale. Sherri Pettigrew, Manager Environmental Programme at Thermal Ceramics, Georgia said: In addition to minimising environmental impact, our EMS is also helping us to secure a competitive advantage through reducing costs and improving efficiency.
She added: It is helping us to reduce public liability insurance risks and demonstrates to our stakeholders and the public that we have an innovative and forward thinking approach, as well as a real commitment to the environment.
Dean Thomas, Manufacturing Systems Manager at Morganite Electrical Carbon Ltd in Swansea, Wales explained: We at MECL have been operating excellent levels of environmental risk management, but werent getting any credit, the ISO14001 standard acknowledges this good work.
He added: I am proud that we have achieved the standard, especially as all the work was done internally by our EHS team of Mike Griffiths and Jeff Macklen. We completed the audit in February and passed with flying colours, the auditors were very positive with their recommendation.
