Containing the fire
What is it?
A high performance duct fire protection material that can withstand temperatures of up to 1,093˚C, despite being just one inch thick and weighing only 12 ounces per square foot. Its brand name is Firemaster.
How does it work?
In a fire it won’t burn, it won’t smoke and it won’t fuel the flames. It’s particularly suitable for insulating ventilation ducts which are often fire hazards, especially those that lead from kitchen stoves. Fires can easily flare up on the hob and, fanned by circulating air and fuelled by trapped grease, spread quickly. Ducts are often inaccessible and extreme heat can puncture the metal, releasing toxic fumes. When wrapped in Firemaster, ducts are protected for up to two hours, and, unlike mineral wall insulation, Firemaster doesn’t shrink, become brittle or absorb kitchen grease. It also saves space: while low-tech methods of insulation need a six-inch gap between duct and material, our flexible wrap can be fixed directly to the duct.
Who uses it?
Firemaster is particularly suitable for insulating ventilation ducts in hotels, and is often specified by leading architects, building inspectors and fire protection engineers. Since we launched our duct fire protection materials in the early 90s, every fire they’ve withstood has been contained within the duct.
